What is Filecoin (FIL)?
Filecoin is a decentralized storage network created by Protocol Labs, the team behind IPFS. Clients pay storage providers in FIL to store data, and providers prove with cryptography that they are keeping it. The project held its token sale in 2017 and its mainnet went live on 15 October 2020.
How Filecoin works
Storage providers commit disk space to the network and submit regular cryptographic proofs, using Proof-of-Replication and Proof-of-Spacetime, to show data is stored over time. Providers lock FIL as collateral, and if they repeatedly fail to submit proofs, part of that collateral is burned. Clients can review a provider's history before choosing one. Most Filecoin nodes are also IPFS nodes, and files are addressed by content identifier. Filecoin documents users such as NFT.Storage, the Internet Archive and Audius.
FIL is used for:
- Paying for storage and retrieval.
- Collateral posted by storage providers.
- Block rewards paid to providers who win the right to create blocks, weighted by storage power.
FIL supply and token design
Filecoin has a capped maximum supply of 2 billion FIL. Block rewards are issued in two parts: a fixed simple minting component of 5.5 FIL per block reward, and baseline minting that adds more FIL when the network's raw storage power is above a baseline target that grows over time. Because collateral penalties and network fees are burned, the amount of FIL that actually circulates is expected to stay below the cap. Storage on Filecoin is set up through deals between clients and providers. Programs such as Filecoin Plus were created to encourage storage of useful public data, and the network supports programmable smart contracts through its virtual machine, so FIL also appears in applications built on top of storage.
