What is Ripple USD (RLUSD)?
Ripple USD (RLUSD) is a US dollar stablecoin issued by Ripple. It is designed to hold a value of one US dollar and to support payments, settlement and treasury use across borders. RLUSD is issued through a New York limited purpose trust company, and Ripple received approval from the New York Department of Financial Services in December 2024. It became available on exchanges from 17 December 2024.
What RLUSD is used for
- Cross-border payments and settlement for businesses that work with Ripple.
- Holding a dollar balance on the XRP Ledger or Ethereum.
- Trading pairs and liquidity on exchanges and in decentralized markets.
- Collateral and liquidity in on-chain finance applications.
RLUSD is separate from XRP. Ripple built RLUSD to give institutions and users a regulated dollar asset alongside XRP, and it is meant to serve as a settlement currency in its payment products. XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger, while RLUSD is a dollar-pegged token that lives on top of it.
RLUSD supply and token design
RLUSD has no fixed supply. Tokens are created when dollars are deposited and removed when tokens are redeemed. Ripple states that each token is backed one to one by US dollar deposits, US government bonds and cash equivalents, held in segregated accounts. It also cites custody by BNY and monthly verification of the reserves by an independent accounting firm, and Ripple says minting and redemption are at par. Availability depends on jurisdiction, so check Ripple's terms for your region.
RLUSD launched on the XRP Ledger and Ethereum, and Ripple lists further networks as available. On the XRP Ledger it is an issued token tied to an official issuer account, so confirm the issuer shown on the official site before accepting any RLUSD balance. - The peg depends on reserves and the issuer. Read the monthly reserve verification rather than assuming full backing.
- RLUSD is a young stablecoin with a shorter record than older competitors.
- Impostor tokens with the same name exist on the XRP Ledger. Check the issuer account before you trust a balance.
- Minting and redemption eligibility and regional availability vary, and most people use exchanges to enter and exit.
- Holding RLUSD earns no built-in yield, and a depeg can happen during market stress.
