What is RE (RE)?

RE is the governance token of Re Protocol, an onchain system that routes stablecoin capital into reinsurance. Eligible users deposit stablecoins into Insurance Capital Layers, which allocate that capital to fully collateralized quota-share reinsurance contracts written through licensed insurers. The "re" brand and protocol are operated by Resilience Foundation Cayman LLC, and regulated reinsurance activity is carried out by Cover Reinsurance SPC Ltd, known as Cover Re. The protocol and Cover Re are separate entities.

How Re works

Re's products form a capital stack, and RE sits alongside it as the governance layer:

• reUSD is the senior tranche, a yield-accruing dollar token whose returns come from blended offchain and onchain deployments.
• reUSDe is a junior, profit-sharing tranche with more exposure to underwriting outcomes.
• RE is the ERC-20 governance token. Staking it allows holders to vote on proposals, act as delegates and sit on committees covering market admissions, risk standards, treasury and technical governance.

Governance is separate from underwriting. Underwriting decisions remain with licensed carriers and accountable underwriters, not token holders.

RE supply and token design

RE has a fixed total supply of 1,000,000,000 tokens, distributed across the ecosystem, investors and advisors, and core contributors, largely under multi-year vesting. Staking is subject to lockups, cooldowns and unbonding periods, and the project states that staking rewards are participation incentives. It also says RE carries no yield, equity, dividend, fee or revenue claim. Live circulating supply is shown in the market data on this page.

Availability depends on where you live. The project says RE is subject to jurisdiction-specific restrictions, and reUSDe is limited to non-U.S. persons in permitted jurisdictions who pass eligibility checks and KYC and AML verification.

What to check before using RE

• RE gives governance and staking rights only, with no claim on reinsurance profits, so its value does not track the products' returns.
• Governance is being introduced in phases and may change, so the rights attached to RE can evolve.
• Access is restricted by jurisdiction, and some Re products exclude U.S. persons.
• Reinsurance losses can reach the junior tranche first, and a large catastrophe could affect the whole capital stack.
• Vesting unlocks and staking cooldowns can affect how easily you can exit a position.
