What is Hedera (HBAR)?
Hedera is a public network for decentralized applications that is open source and uses proof of stake. Instead of the block-by-block structure used by most blockchains, it is built on the hashgraph consensus algorithm, invented by Dr. Leemon Baird. Nodes spread information to each other by gossip and reach agreement through virtual voting, so no single miner or block producer decides the order of transactions. Hedera says its algorithm is asynchronous Byzantine fault tolerant and cites a computer-checked proof for that claim.
HBAR is the network's native cryptocurrency. The network is overseen by the Hedera Council, made up of up to 39 organizations from different industries and regions, each with an equal vote on software upgrades, network pricing and treasury management. Members serve limited terms, and anyone can propose changes through Hedera Improvement Proposals.
What HBAR is used for
HBAR pays for using the network. Fees are set in US dollars and converted to HBAR at the time of each transaction, with token transfers starting from $0.0001. Developers can use three main services:
- Consensus Service: timestamps and orders messages, with optional encryption.
- Token Service: creates and manages fungible and non-fungible tokens without writing a smart contract.
- Smart Contract Service: runs Solidity contracts on an EVM based on Besu.

HBAR supply and token design
A fixed supply of 50 billion HBAR was created and placed in a treasury account at the start, and the network opened to the public on 16 September 2019. Moving HBAR out of the treasury requires signatures from a majority of Council members, and total supply cannot be changed without the unanimous consent of the Council. Treasury coins are released slowly over time rather than all at once, so circulating supply rises gradually. Live circulating supply is shown in the market data on this page.
What to check before using HBAR
- Governance model: decisions rest with a council of selected organizations, a different trust arrangement from networks where validators are open to anyone. Consider how that fits your own expectations.
- Treasury releases: because part of the 50 billion supply is held back and released over time, circulating supply is not the same as total supply.
- Fee conversion: fees are fixed in dollars, so the HBAR amount you pay changes with the HBAR price.
- Wallet and exchange support: check that your wallet supports HBAR and any account or memo requirements before sending funds.
