What is Sui (SUI)?
Sui is a layer-one blockchain that runs its own consensus and validates its own transactions. It was developed by Mysten Labs, a company founded by former engineers from Meta's Diem project, and its mainnet launched publicly on 3 May 2023. SUI is the network's native token. Smart contracts are written in the Move programming language.
The design differs from account-based chains. On Sui, everything is an object with its own identifier, metadata and owner, including coins and tokens. Since many transactions only touch objects owned by the sender, the network can process them in parallel instead of ordering everything in one queue. Sui uses delegated proof of stake: validators run the network, and token holders delegate SUI to them. Its consensus engine was originally Narwhal and Bullshark and now uses Mysticeti.
What SUI is used for
- Gas: SUI pays fees for transactions on the network.
- Staking: holders delegate SUI to validators, who are selected through stake, and share in rewards each epoch.
- Applications: the Sui ecosystem includes components such as Walrus for data storage, Seal for encryption, DeepBook for onchain liquidity and SuiNS for names, and targets sectors including DeFi, payments and AI.
SUI supply and token design
Supply is capped at 10 billion SUI. Roughly 5 percent was in circulation at mainnet launch, and the rest is released on a schedule intended to support network stability, so the circulating amount is well below the cap. Named allocations include a Community Reserve managed by the Sui Foundation for validator delegation, grants and research, a Community Access program that let early contributors buy SUI, and a treasury for Mysten Labs. - Concentrated early allocations: a share of supply sits with the foundation, the original developer and early contributors, which can influence validator stake and governance.
