What is Sky (SKY)?
Sky is the new name for the Maker protocol, one of the longest-running decentralized finance projects on Ethereum. The rebrand arrived in September 2024 with a new stablecoin, USDS, and a new governance token, SKY. SKY holders decide how the protocol is run, and the old MKR token can be exchanged for SKY at a fixed rate of 24,000 SKY per MKR.
How Sky works
Sky Protocol issues USDS, a dollar-pegged stablecoin that is also designed to earn a savings rate. USDS can be converted one to one with USDC through the protocol's Peg Stability Module. The Sky Savings Rate is set by governance and funded from protocol surplus, so it can change or fall to zero.
Sky.money is a non-custodial interface to the protocol. It is operated by Skybase International, which states that it does not control the smart contracts or governance.
What SKY is used for
- Governance: SKY holders vote on protocol parameters such as rates, collateral rules and fees through on-chain voting.
- Staking: SKY can be staked to earn rewards for taking part in governance.
- Borrowing: staked SKY can be used as collateral to borrow USDS.
- Backstop role: USDS lent against SKY collateral can be exposed to losses if liquidations fall short, which ties the protocol's safety closely to SKY.
SKY supply and token design
SKY came into existence through the MKR upgrade, so its supply is tied to the old MKR supply multiplied by 24,000, which gives a total in the tens of billions of tokens. Live circulating supply is shown in the market data on this page. The token has 18 decimals and is a standard ERC-20 on Ethereum. Check the contract address before buying or approving anything, because look-alike tokens exist: 0x56072C95FAA701256059aa122697B133aDEd9279.

- Stablecoin risk: USDS may be under-collateralised in stress and can lose its peg.
