What is USD Coin (USDC)?
USDC is a stablecoin designed to stay equal in value to one US dollar. It was launched in September 2018 by Circle and Coinbase through the CENTRE consortium, an open-source group created to set standards for fiat-backed tokens, and is now issued and managed by Circle, a financial technology company. The token first appeared on Ethereum using the ERC-20 standard.
The idea is simple: US dollars go in, tokens come out, and the tokens can later be exchanged back for dollars. Circle states that USDC is redeemable one-to-one for US dollars and that the reserves backing it equal or exceed the amount in circulation. Because it lives on public blockchains, it can be moved at any hour.
What USDC is used for
Most people meet USDC as a dollar-denominated balance on exchanges, in wallets and in neobank apps. It is also widely used inside decentralized finance, where lending and trading pools need a stable unit of account. USDC is natively issued on more than 30 blockchains, including Ethereum, Solana, Base and Avalanche, so the same dollar token can be used on whichever network an application runs on.
- Direct redemption: Circle Mint, which exchanges dollars for USDC at par with Circle itself, is offered to exchanges, institutional traders, banks and large financial institutions, not to individuals or small businesses.
- Everyone else: individuals typically use exchanges, neobanks or wallets.
USDC supply and token design
USDC has no fixed maximum supply. New tokens are created when dollars are deposited with the issuer and are removed from circulation when tokens are redeemed, so the amount in existence follows demand rather than a preset schedule. The reserve is held in cash and cash-equivalent assets: most of it sits in a US government money market fund managed by BlackRock, and the rest is cash at regulated financial institutions. What to check before using USDC
- Issuer and reserve risk: a stablecoin is only as sound as the institutions holding its reserves. In March 2023 USDC fell to roughly 87 cents after Circle disclosed that about $3.3 billion of its cash was held at the failing Silicon Valley Bank; it later regained its peg.
- Access to redemption: par redemption with Circle is not open to most individuals, so in practice the price you can sell at depends on the exchange or service you use.
- Which network you hold it on: USDC exists on many chains, and sending it to the wrong network or a non-native copy can cause losses or delays. Confirm the chain and contract in the official list before transferring.
- Platform and regulatory risk: rules for stablecoins differ by country, and exchanges may restrict or delist tokens in some regions.
