What is Terra Classic (LUNC)?
Terra Classic is the original Terra blockchain, and LUNC is its native token. Terra was created by Terraform Labs, co-founded in Seoul by Do Kwon and Daniel Shin, and launched in April 2019 as a payments chain built around fiat-pegged stablecoins. Its algorithmic stablecoin TerraUSD (UST) lost its peg in May 2022, and the value of LUNA collapsed with it.
On 25 May 2022 a governance proposal approved a new chain, Terra, with a new LUNA token. The original chain continued as Terra Classic and its token became known as LUNA Classic, now commonly LUNC. Terra Classic has remained online since the collapse and is maintained by community contributors and validators. Its code is open source under the Apache 2.0 licence.
How Terra Classic works
The chain is built on the Cosmos SDK and uses Tendermint BFT proof-of-stake consensus. Validators produce blocks, and token holders delegate LUNC to them to earn staking rewards. Unbonding takes 21 days. Governance is on-chain: delegators vote on proposals from a wallet and can override their validator's vote during the voting period.
- Staking and fees: LUNC secures the network and pays transaction fees.
- Governance: Holders vote on parameters and upgrades, including the burn tax.
- Ecosystem: Wallets such as Keplr, Galaxy Station and Cosmostation support staking and voting.
LUNC supply and token design
LUNC has no fixed maximum supply, and the supply is far larger than before the collapse because new LUNA was minted during the attempt to restore the UST peg. The community has used governance to reduce supply through a transaction tax burn. A 1.2% burn on LUNC and USTC transfers was introduced by governance, and Proposal 5234 reduced it to 0.2% in October 2022 after arguments that the higher rate discouraged activity. Community burn wallets and exchange burns also remove tokens.

What to check before using LUNC
- Collapse history: The ecosystem lost most of its value in 2022, and Terraform Labs filed for bankruptcy in January 2024.
- Very large supply: The token count is in the trillions, so small price moves in nominal terms do not reflect the burn rate. Burns remove only a small fraction of supply.
- USTC: The related USTC token no longer holds its USD peg and should be treated as a volatile asset.
- Community-run development: There is no central company behind the chain, so upgrades depend on volunteers and governance votes.
- Name confusion: Terra (LUNA) and Terra Classic (LUNC) are different chains and tokens. Check which one an exchange lists.
