What is SPDR S&P 500 ETF (Ondo Tokenized) (SPYON)?
SPYon is a tokenized version of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF, issued by Ondo Global Markets (BVI) Limited through Ondo's tokenized stocks platform. It is a tracker token: it gives onchain economic exposure to the fund, not direct ownership of ETF shares. Ondo's tokenized US stocks and ETFs first opened on Ethereum for investors outside the United States, and the range later grew to cover Solana and BNB Chain.
How SPYON works
Ondo says its tokens are fully backed by the underlying asset together with any cash in transit. The issuer is structured as a bankruptcy-remote special purpose vehicle with at least one independent director, and the tokens are overcollateralized with a first-priority security interest held by a third-party security agent. Assets held at regulated US entities are attested daily.
- Minting and redeeming: there are no mint or burn fees, and both happen instantly in a single atomic transaction. Holders can redeem for cash or stablecoins at the value of the underlying at that time.
- Access: tokens are generally available to non-US investors, subject to jurisdictional restrictions. Coverage of the launch said US, UK and EEA residents were excluded. Buying or selling directly on the platform requires KYC, and onboarding has been limited to institutions, with retail planned.
- Dividends: the tokens are total return trackers. Dividends are reinvested into the underlying fund, net of withholding tax, so one token can come to represent more than one share over time.
