What is PancakeSwap (CAKE)?
PancakeSwap is a decentralised exchange (DEX) that started on BNB Smart Chain and uses an automated market maker (AMM) model. Users trade tokens directly from their wallets against liquidity pools, and liquidity providers earn a share of trading fees. CAKE is the platform's native token. Its original token contract is on BNB Smart Chain.
What CAKE is used for
CAKE is used across the PancakeSwap ecosystem, and the protocol directs CAKE emissions towards the pools and products that bring the most activity.
- Rewards: CAKE is emitted to farms, the lottery and ecosystem growth programmes.
- Governance and participation: holders take part in community proposals on tokenomics and product changes.
- Product use: CAKE features in the lottery and in launch products run by the platform.
CAKE supply and token design
CAKE has a hard cap of 400 million tokens. A community proposal approved in January 2026 lowered the previous cap of 450 million. New CAKE enters circulation through emissions, and tokens are removed through a buy-back-and-burn programme.
The programme targets an annual deflation rate of at least about 4% and a total supply reduction of about 20% by 2030. Burns are funded by a share of spot trading fees, 20% of perpetual trading profits, 100% of CAKE.PAD fees and 20% of the CAKE spent in the lottery. CAKE permanently locked in the legacy CAKE pool also counts as burned.

- Changing tokenomics: emission and burn rules have been revised several times, so older guides may be out of date.
- Impermanent loss: providing liquidity can leave you with less value than simply holding the tokens.
- Smart-contract risk: farms, pools and new products rely on contracts that can contain bugs.
- Scam tokens: anyone can list a token on a DEX, so verify contract addresses and avoid unknown pools.
- Competition: DEX volumes shift between chains and rivals, which affects fee income and burns.
