What is MegaETH (MEGA)?
MegaETH is an Ethereum Layer 2 network that describes itself as the first real-time blockchain. It settles on Ethereum and is built for very high throughput. The project's own claims include more than 100,000 transactions per second and block times under 10 milliseconds. MEGA is the network's native token. It went live on April 30, 2026 after the industry's first KPI-triggered token generation event, in which the launch followed MegaETH meeting its first performance milestone. MegaETH raised a $20 million seed round in 2024 led by Dragonfly and later held a public sale.
What MEGA is used for
MEGA is the native token that powers the network. Its most distinctive use is KPI staking: holders lock MEGA and receive rewards when the network reaches defined targets. The four KPIs are:
- Ecosystem growth, measured by total value locked and USDM stablecoin supply.
- MegaETH decentralization, following the stage framework for Layer 2s.
- Performance, including higher bandwidth and lower latency.
- Ethereum decentralization, such as client diversity and block-building concentration.
MegaETH also reports that Chainlink is live on the network, giving applications access to DeFi assets, and several applications are already running on its mainnet. Performance claims, however, remain the project's own.
MEGA supply and token design
The total supply is capped at 10 billion MEGA. Just over 53% was set aside for KPI staking rewards, released only as milestones are met, not on a calendar schedule. If targets are not met, those tokens stay locked, and a future vote may decide what happens to them. Other allocations include about 14.7% for investors, 9.5% for the team and advisors, 7.5% for the foundation, and roughly 15% for the public sale and a crowdfunding round.
