What is ApeCoin (APE)?
ApeCoin is the governance and utility token of the ApeCoin DAO, a community-run organisation formed around the Bored Ape Yacht Club ecosystem. The Bored Ape Yacht Club account announced the token on 16 March 2022, and claims for its airdrop opened the next day. Yuga Labs, the creator of Bored Ape, was behind the launch. The stated aim was to let the community build blockchain games and services, host events and create digital and physical products. The APE Foundation supports the DAO, and an administrative council helps carry out the decisions token holders vote on.
APE is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Its supply was created at once, and its role is to give holders a say in how the DAO treasury is used.
What APE is used for
- Governance: holders vote on proposals that direct DAO funds toward games, services, events and products.
- Gas on ApeChain: ApeChain, an Arbitrum Orbit chain built to support the ApeCoin ecosystem, uses APE as its native gas token.
APE supply and token design
The total supply is fixed at 1 billion APE. At launch it was allocated as follows:
- 15% (150 million) as an airdrop to holders of Bored Ape, Mutant Ape and paired Bored Ape Kennel Club NFTs.
- 47% (470 million) to the DAO treasury and resources, with 117.5 million unlocked at launch and the remainder released monthly over four years.
- 8% (80 million) to the four founders of Yuga Labs, after a 12-month lock followed by 36 monthly unlocks.
- The rest to launch contributors, Yuga Labs and the Jane Goodall Legacy Foundations, with lock-ups.
