What is Walrus (WAL)?
Walrus is a decentralized data storage and availability protocol built on the Sui blockchain. It was created by Mysten Labs, the company behind Sui, and is now supported by the Walrus Foundation. Walrus describes itself as a data platform for the demands of AI. Large files, called blobs, are stored across a network of independent storage nodes instead of with a single provider. WAL is the network's native token. Mainnet launched in March 2025.
How Walrus works
When data is stored, it gets an ID derived from its contents, and that ID is recorded on Sui, so anyone can check that the data has not been altered. Storage nodes also post proofs on Sui that they actually hold the data. WAL has three jobs:
- Payment. Users pay for storage in WAL at a fixed price in US dollar terms, with the WAL amount adjusting to market price. Write fees are paid in WAL too, while gas on Sui is paid in SUI.
- Security. Walrus uses delegated proof of stake. Shards of data are assigned to storage nodes roughly in proportion to the stake delegated to them.
- Governance. WAL holders adjust network parameters.
Storage payments go into a fund that pays nodes each epoch based on measured performance, and stakers share in those rewards. Walrus never slashes delegated principal. A slash burns the node operator's accumulated commission, and poor node performance reduces the rewards that delegators earn.
WAL supply and token design
The maximum supply of WAL is 5 billion. 3% of each epoch's total rewards is burned. Some of the supply was reserved for community distribution, including a soulbound NFT airdrop claimable at mainnet. Live circulating supply is shown in the market data on this page.

What to check before using WAL
- Walrus relies on Sui for coordination and proofs. A problem on Sui can affect Walrus.
- Decentralized storage competes with cloud giants and other decentralized storage networks, so adoption is not guaranteed.
- Staking has epoch timing. Newly added stake may only become active after a delay.
- Deleting a blob does not refund WAL, so check storage terms before paying for long periods.
- Vesting and unlock schedules can add supply over time, so review the tokenomics documents.
