What is Linea (LINEA)?
Linea is a zero-knowledge rollup, a layer 2 network that scales Ethereum by processing transactions off the main chain and proving them to Ethereum with validity proofs. It was bootstrapped by Consensys and is described as owned by the Linea community, with the Linea Association, a Swiss non-profit, helping carry out decisions of the Linea Consortium. The LINEA token had its generation event on 10 September 2025, when claims opened for an airdrop.
How Linea and LINEA work
Gas on the network is paid in ETH, so users do not need LINEA to transact. The token carries no governance rights. Its design centres on the economic link between network activity and Ethereum:
- After infrastructure costs are paid, surplus network revenue is burned.
- 20% of that burn is carried out in ETH.
- The other 80% is swapped for LINEA, bridged to Ethereum and burned there.
- Anyone can trigger the final burn step on Ethereum.
The Ecosystem Fund finances Ethereum research and development, shared infrastructure, public goods and strategic co-development. At the token generation event, 22% of supply entered circulation through airdrops, ecosystem activations and DEX liquidity.
LINEA supply and token design
The genesis supply, which is also the maximum, is 72,009,990,000 LINEA, and burns reduce it over time. Of this, 85% is allocated to the ecosystem and 15% is held by the Consensys treasury. The ecosystem share breaks down as follows:
- 75% in a long-term Ecosystem Fund managed by the Linea Consortium, unlocking over ten years at a declining rate.
- 10% for early contributors and strategic builders, fully unlocked.
The docs state there is no allocation for private investors, insiders, employees or team members apart from the Consensys treasury. The Consensys tokens are non-transferable for five years. Live circulating supply is shown in the market data on this page.
