What is Hyperliquid (HYPE)?
Hyperliquid is a layer-one blockchain built around on-chain trading. Its goal is a fully on-chain financial system, and the network runs on a custom consensus algorithm called HyperBFT, which is inspired by HotStuff and its successors. HYPE is the native token of this chain.
The chain has two main parts. HyperCore hosts order books for perpetual futures and spot markets, where trades, cancellations and liquidations settle with one-block finality, and Hyperliquid says it supports around 200,000 orders per second. HyperEVM is an Ethereum-style smart contract environment that lets other applications build on top of HyperCore's liquidity. Most users know the project through its trading app, which is why the Hyperliquid name is often used for both the exchange and the chain.
What HYPE is used for
HYPE secures the network and pays for activity on its smart contract side. Hyperliquid uses delegated proof of stake, where holders delegate HYPE to validators. HYPE also serves as gas on HyperEVM.
- Validators: a validator needs 10,000 HYPE of self-delegation to become active, and that stake is locked for one year.
- Delegation: each delegation has a one-day lockup, and moving HYPE from staking back to a spot balance goes through a seven-day unstaking queue.
- Rewards: staking rewards accrue every minute, are paid daily and compound automatically. The rate falls as total staked HYPE rises, and rewards are funded from a future emissions reserve.
HYPE supply and token design
HYPE has a maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. The token was first distributed in November 2024 through an airdrop to early users, with no investor unlocks at genesis. Later emissions go toward community rewards, core contributors and the Hyper Foundation. Live circulating supply is shown in the market data on this page.

What to check before using HYPE
- Leveraged derivatives: the main product is perpetual futures, where leverage can liquidate a position quickly. HYPE's activity is closely tied to that trading business.
- Staking terms: unstaking takes seven days, and automatic slashing is not currently implemented, so validator misbehaviour is handled differently from many other proof-of-stake chains.
- Third-party contracts: applications on HyperEVM are built by outside teams and carry their own smart-contract risk.
- Which HYPE you hold: confirm you are using the native token and the correct network when moving funds between exchanges and wallets.
