What is Bio Protocol (BIO)?
Bio Protocol is a platform for decentralized science (DeSci). It connects funding, research and commercialization in one loop, so communities can finance early-stage scientific work and share in the outcomes. Its Launchpad lets projects raise money from a community, and Buildspace helps them prepare. BIO is the protocol's token, and it reached the market in early January 2025 via a Binance Launchpool listing. The project's stated aim is to make early-stage research easier to fund and own collectively, rather than leaving it to a small group of institutions.
What BIO is used for
The platform is organized around BioDAOs, onchain communities focused on a research area. Examples named on the site include VitaDAO (longevity), AthenaDAO (women's health), PsyDAO (psychedelic science), ValleyDAO (synthetic biology) and HairDAO. Beyond funding, Bio Protocol provides:
- BIOS: an AI tool for designing new medicines.
- OpenLabs: a space for scientists to share early results and find collaborators.
- Biofy: a route to turn validated research into products, with revenue meant to flow back to backers.

BIO launched with a genesis supply of 3.32 billion tokens. Reported allocations include a community auction, a community airdrop and a large ecosystem incentives pool.
